Drone Remote ID & FAA Registration: Complete Compliance Guide for 2025
Understanding Drone Registration and Remote ID Requirements
Flying drones in the United States requires compliance with FAA regulations. This guide covers everything you need to know about drone registration and Remote ID to fly legally and safely.
Do You Need to Register Your Drone?
The FAA requires registration for:
- Recreational drones weighing between 0.55 lbs (250g) and 55 lbs
- All commercial drones regardless of weight
- Drones flown outdoors in U.S. airspace
Registration costs $5 and is valid for 3 years. You can register at FAADroneZone.faa.gov.
What is Remote ID?
Remote ID is like a digital license plate for drones. As of September 16, 2023, all drones flown in U.S. airspace must broadcast Remote ID information, including:
- Drone's unique identifier
- Location and altitude
- Control station location
- Emergency status
Three Ways to Comply with Remote ID
1. Standard Remote ID (Built-in): Many newer drones like DJI models have Remote ID built into the firmware. Check your drone's specifications or manufacturer website.
2. Remote ID Broadcast Module: Add an external module to older drones that don't have built-in Remote ID. These modules attach to your drone and broadcast the required information.
3. FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs): Fly at designated community-based flying fields where Remote ID isn't required. Find FRIAs at FAA.gov.
How to Register Your Drone
- Visit FAADroneZone.faa.gov
- Create an account or log in
- Select recreational or commercial registration
- Pay the $5 registration fee
- Receive your registration number immediately
- Mark your drone externally with the registration number
Part 107 for Commercial Pilots
If you're flying for business purposes (real estate, inspections, content creation), you need a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate:
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Pass the FAA aeronautical knowledge test
- Pass TSA background check
- Valid for 24 months
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Flying without proper registration or Remote ID can result in:
- Civil penalties up to $27,500
- Criminal penalties up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment
- Confiscation of equipment
Remote ID Modules Available
We carry FAA-compliant Remote ID broadcast modules that work with most FPV drones. These lightweight modules integrate seamlessly with your build and ensure full compliance.
Stay Compliant, Fly Safely
